Tyler Strong Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Tyler Strong Memorial Scholarship
Established by the family and friends of Tyler Kowatch following his passing, the Fund is intended to support qualified students from the Jim Thorpe Area High School in Carbon County.
The Tyler Strong Scholarship shall be a one-year, $500 non-renewable scholarship awarded annually to a qualified graduating high school senior (or home-schooled student who has a state recognized graduation certificate/diploma) residing in Jim Thorpe Area School District, Jim Thorpe, PA, who is seeking to further their education at a trade/technical school or community college.
Minimum qualifications for the scholarship include:
- A proven record of academic success with at least a cumulative B average (the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA in a 4.0 grade point system) over the two years prior to graduation
- Preference will be given to a track and field athlete.
- The scholarship will be based on merit alone, so submitting the FAFSA is not necessary. Merit should be demonstrated through good attendance and character; the ideal candidate is someone who is fair, friendly and a peacemaker among peers.
Deadline to Apply: March 1, 2024
Students should pick up an application in the Jim Thorpe school guidance office.
Tyler Kowatch lived a happy life with his family in Jim Thorpe, playing video games with his brother and participating in track and field. Many who met and knew him would never have guessed that he endured several heart surgeries since birth. Tyler was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. In December 2017, he went into heart failure and learned that he would need a heart transplant in order to survive. The “Tyler Strong” campaign was born when the community rallied to raise funds and offer support for Tyler and his family as they fought for his life in an extended stay at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Sadly, Tyler passed away at the age of 18 due to complications from surgery on May 5, 2018. Tyler’s family established the Tyler Strong Memorial Scholarship to both honor his memory and give thanks to the community that supported them in their hour of need.
