Ron Hydro Outstanding Athlete Award Fund
About This Award:
The Ron Hydro Outstanding Athlete Award is a one-year, non-renewable scholarship of at least $500 granted annually to a qualified graduating high school senior from Jim Thorpe Area School District. The award was endowed in April 2026 by Ryan Hydro and his wife, Sheila, in honor of his father Ron’s upcoming 80th birthday.
Minimum qualifications for the scholarship include:
- Graduating high school senior from Jim Thorpe Area School District
- Starting member of the Jim Thorpe Area High School boys’ basketball team
- Demonstrated record of community service
- Preference will be given to the student with the highest GPA
The scholarship shall be paid to the institution of higher education or advanced vocational training during the first year of study, contingent upon the student’s continued enrollment.
Ron Hydro
This award is presented in honor of Ron Hydro, a 1964 Jim Thorpe Area School District graduate and starting member of both the 1963 PA State Championship Class C Runner Up and 1964 basketball teams. After graduation, Ron served in the US Army and went on to serve in the PA State Police for 27 years, attaining the rank of Sgt. and Station Commander.
